Michael Jackson was MY first real pop star craze. I had a poster of Michael Jackson in my room, Thriller was my first album (yes, LP), and my dad had to rent Thriller for weeks after it came out so that I could watch it over and over again. It's funny how much a part of my life Micheal Jackson's music was, and to some degree still is today. When I head to the gym, there's nothing like "The Way You Make Me Feel" to make me clip along on the treadmill! For this fan, I always hoped for a comeback, and he will be missed.
(If you want to skip to the most famous scenes of this video, the Vincent Price monologue is around 6:20, and that great ghoul dance that is iconic today is around 8:20.)

My fiance is quite sad that he died. He's a little older than me and remembers better when Michael Jackson was just a pop star and not a crazy guy. He's always said that regardless of his personal issues, he was a fantastically talented musician and dancer, and Keith was a big fan of that. I was busy wishing we had enough $ to see him in London, but now it doesn't even matter. Poor guy.
ReplyDeleteMichael Jackson was never really on my radar so much, but I do like Billy Jean. I was really depressed with Jerry Garcia died, so I sympathize. :)
ReplyDeleteIt is very sad, I have to admit - he was weird, if I may say so, in many ways as he grew older...but I always feel that whatever he was like, something (his tough upbringing and lack of a real childhood) all went towards adding to his darker side, which seems very unfair to me. That's not to say I didn't like him - he will be sadly missed. I loved Thriller, when that came out it was so new and exciting!
ReplyDeleteBtw, I've been given an award and I am forwarding it onto you - a new-ish blogger I have discovered because I feel you deserve it. You can pick up your award HERE.
Thanks for the enjoyment your blog brings! Take care,
Sassy

He was beaten by his father and robbed of his childhood...who wouldn't be weird. I think in the end he will have been robbed twice, once in childhood from adults and secondly by an unchecked drug addiction. Looking at his life is such a confusing thing...brilliant...talented..and confused.Lets remember his legacy and lets remember drug addiction destroys all that is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThanks for all your comments! As a young fan, I didn't enjoy watching his downfall in his later years, but still am reminded of the pop star I knew as a young teen. This video definitely fed into my appreciation of his work!
ReplyDeleteI loved him between ages 7 and 9. It's so strange that he's gone.
ReplyDeleteI'm still stunned. Last night when hubby and I went to dinner we sat at the bar so we could watch the VH1 special with back to back videos. I love Michael Jackson's music and I'm sad that another legend is gone. My first CD was Janet Jackson. :) (don't remember first tape...too long ago!)
ReplyDeleteHe was mine too..... doing high school in the 80's I think my friends and I knew all the moves to this dance. Thanks for posting. My heart still is sad.
