Footloose (2011)

Can I admit that I'm not sure how I feel about the updated version of Footloose that comes out next month?  Why, you ask?  Well, I was raised on the original.  It was one of the first soundtracks I ever owned.  I had a HUGE crush on Kevin Bacon when I was a teen.  And, to top it off, the movie was filmed near where I live and work.  Remember the mill where Wren worked and where they held the dance?  Well, they filmed it at the Lehi Roller Mills, which I drive by every morning on my way to work.  The school I teach at is basically on the same lot as the mill, but we're behind where the mill sits.  (The mill still runs and has some amazing products at their "Lehi Roller Mills" site that they sell.  All of their flour and mixes are amazing!  We give them as gifts all the time, and I stop in to pick flour up for daily use.)

Here's the original release, in case you haven't seen it in a long time:

Anyway, I'm feeling a lot of mixed feelings about the newest release.  Here's that release.  What do you think?

  1. I am very mixed up too for all the reasons you list. I mean, Kevin Bacon IS Wren! How can someone else be him? I guess we'll see how it works, huh? I will probably see it (DVD I bet) just out of curiosity.

  2. I don't understand the need for a remake. Kevin Bacon is the bee's knees! No one will ever be Wren in my eyes.

  3. As usual, I didn't even know anything about this new Footloose! I grew up on the original, and so it seems weird to have a new one. It looked better than I thought it would, but I think if I see it I'm going to have a hard time mostly because now I'll be watching it with a parent's perspective and not a teenager's.

  4. If it's not filmed at Payson High, it's not Footloose!

  5. To be honest, I was never a huge fan of the original, (don't hit me) so I probably won't see the new one either. However, I will say, why fix something that isn't broken? I don't get why Hollywood keeps making remakes. Can't they think of anything original?

  6. I am also a lover of the original Footloose. Considering that I went to see it in the theater SIX times, it will be hard to top for me also!

  7. The whole point of the first movie is that dancing is not a sin--that you can dance just to have fun. However this new one--uh--let's just say they aren't just having fun, if you get my drift. The remake looks terrible to me.

And no one can dance like Kevin bacon. You can't remake that. :D

I used to have a huge crush on Wren as well. In the movie his cousin's name is Amy---I always thought I was special for that. Hahahahaha!

  8. This post reminded me that I still haven't seen the original Footloose yet. I've been meaning to, since it was filmed in Utah. I'm going to watch it right now. :)

I hope this new one is good, but the new movies never do the old ones justice. :(

  9. I am not sure what to think of them remaking this movie... It is just not going to be the same...

  10. Suey--Yeah, I think I'll be a DVD gal as well. It would just be too weird to see it.

Carrie--I'm not sure I get the whole remake thing either. Aren't they going to remake Dirty Dancing as well? It seems a little soon to me.

Shelley--I hadn't even thought about the whole "adult perspective" bit. It's true that we didn't watch it with the same critical eye the first time around! :)

Emily--I didn't know the HS in it was Payson! How cool. It's such a Utah County-ish film to begin with, that I think a lot of us are going to struggle seeing it set elsewhere. :(

Jenny--Amen to the remakes. That's okay if you don't like it. I was just raised on it, so I liked it from the get-go!

Jo-Jo--Okay, that is so stinking cool! :) I love it that you were such a fan of the original. I'll really be interested in what you think of the remake then.

Amy!!!--Yeah, I loved that nerdy dance at the end of the original. :) Although, I also remember being slightly scandalized on several occasions in the original movie. My mom let me watch it though, so I ran with it. LOL. (I miss you! I hope you're doing well.)

Penelope--Hi Penelope! You really should see the original. It's fun to reminisce about the area before it became so populated. It might feel super outdated, but it's still fun!

Kailana--So true. I don't know what to think.

  12. I love the original too. You just can't replace Kevin Bacon. The new one looked ok, but almost a mix of Footloose and Dirty Dancing when it comes to the actual dancing. And being a parent now, I don't know that I want to encourage my kids to disobey me so blatantly. We'll see.

  13. I really dislike this whole trend of remaking 1980s classic movies. Footloose, Dirty Dancing, Ferris Bueller's Day Off. They are classics for a reason. I think I will be boycotting the Footlosse remake. I mean, it's Kevin Bacon!!

  14. It looks like a cute dance movie but it lacks the charm of the original. Great post :)

  15. I loved the original. It looks so dated now! LOL. The new one looks interesting and it looks like they've stayed somewhat true to the story. I just don't see what the deal is about remaking movies. Aren't there enough new ideas out there without remaking the classics?

I do have to say that I didn't mind the Karate Kid remake and my boys love it.

I haven't watched Footloose in years. I introduced '80s films to my kids and now they love Back to the Future and Short Circuit. I wonder what they'd think of the original Footloose!
