Happy 4th of July

Happy 4th of July. I know I'm in a beautiful location for the summer, but I have to admit that I'm missing our extended family. We've always celebrated the holiday together, going to a local parade, followed by a family barbecue in my aunt's back yard or down by the river, ending with a family firework show. Here in Hawaii it's just the two of us (mom and me). We're going to sleep in, head to the beach & eat our lunch there, and then drive later that night to the North Shore for a free fireworks show. I know! It sounds so ideal, and yet I'm really missing family this year.

So here's the thing. It really will be a relaxing, delightful day, but I'd like to butt in on your lives and hear what you're doing today! Are you going to be with family today (or were you), and are you glad to be? :) Let me know what you're doing this weekend to celebrate the 4th of July!

  1. Unfortunately, I will be working tonight:( Kids and I will be cooking out and maybe a movie on Sunday though. Really, for me, it's just like any other day.

I'd rather be where you are!

  2. The 4th of July is always a big deal in my town - I just wrote a post about our plans for the day. I hope you and your Mom have a wonderful day, too, even if it's not with lots of other family.

  3. I'm just going to be at home with family, not doing anything special. With a predicted temp of 101+, it's too hot to barbeque or anything outside, and with a 2-year long drought, there's a burn ban across the entire area, which means no one is allow to do any fireworks at all. Of course, there will still be people testing both the law and the dry grass, but hopefully that won't mean any fires near us...

  4. It is hard to be away from family during celebrations. I'm glad you and your mom are together to celebrate though. It's not a holiday here in Canada but it is my birthday! I really should live in the States and then everyone would celebrate with me. lol. Have a great day!

  5. Kids are grown and hubby and I are just thankful to have a day off - LOL
We are 40 years old and have little family around.... I am reading today and he is napping (ok, maybe he is old...ha ha)

Later we are watching Pride and Prejudice as part of the Austen challenge.

It may sound boring - but to us who run so hard 15+ hours a day as business owners... this is a treat!

  6. Thanks all! I feel silly for being a bit "homesick" while here, but I think it's just that my family are all gathered and we're not with them. This has taught me a funny lesson, that people matter more than things. Not that my mom and I can't have a great time here, but that all the people I love would trump a beautiful locale any day!

Thanks for sharing your days as well. I love that most of you were just "chill" (as my students would say) about your day. I've adopted that stance for the day! :)
